Ways to Build Relationship with Students

One of the most important things to me as a future educator is to have a good rapport with my students. Developing positive relationships between a teacher and student is an important aspect of quality teaching and student learning. Positive teacher-student relationships promote a sense of school belonging and encourage students to participate together. Relationships are the essential element in our schools. Jennifer gave us great ways to build this relationship with your students and this is something I will utilize in the classroom. As stated, skilled educators know the value of having good connections with students. Establishing goodwill can help minimize classroom disruptions, improve student engagement, and reduce negative situations for everyone.
All the strategies suggested spoke with me. I truly agreed with the first step which simply states Greet students at the door, smile and call them by name. Also, tell them you are glad to see them. I want my students to feel welcomes and know that they are in a safe, loving environment. Showing them vulnerability is critical. I should let my guard down and show my students that you are a learner, you make mistakes, and persevere.  I want them to know not every student or teacher is perfect. They will see me as a person, opening the door for a relationship built on trust. I will also share stories about myself as a learner or challenges I’ve faced when you were there age and help them see what it took to overcome it. I’ve seen my own mentor teacher do this in her classroom especially during circle time when we tell stories of what is going on in life.  I shared my own stories as well and this caused them to open up more to me.
I feel Jennifer touched on everything we need to know about building relationships with our students. It is very important to know your students as individuals. Find out their interests as well. This can support my students into become better learners. Improving students' relationships with teachers has important, positive and long-lasting effects for both students' academic and social development. Solely improving students' relationships will produce achievement in my classroom which I am looking forward to it.
